Dbanj, Yemi Alade, Oprah Winfrey Angelique Kidjo champion cause for women

To mark the 2016 International Women’s Day, various international figures have spoken out on the need for poverty eradication as well as empowering the girl-child and women in general. Some of the influential figures who have thrown their weights behind the campaign include Muhammed Ali, Melinda Gates, Charlize Theron, Oprah Winfrey, Femi Kuti, Dbanj and Yemi Alade.

In addition to this Angelique Kidjo, Shonda Rhimes, Victoria Kimani and more have also shown solidarity towards the cause. The International Women’s Day (IWD) was celebrated on Tuesday, March 8 2016.

The theme for this year’s campaign is Pledge For Parity. The idea behind this is to sensitize people around the world towards making giant steps towards achieving gender equality everywhere around them – from enabling women to helping provide education for the girl-child in order for them to achieve their dreams, encouraging more gender-balanced leadership and whatnot.

According to Vanguard, Afro pop icon Dbanj spoke on the issue of empowering the girl-child as he lamented the rate at which poverty hits the female population than males. He added that poverty is sexist.
