Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid get FIFA ban until 2018

Spanish football giants, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have been banned by the world football's governing body, FIFA, for breaching rules over the transfer of foreign players under 18 who played in competitions for Atletico between 2007 and 2014, and for Real from 2005-2014.

Therefore, the clubs won’t be signing new players in the next two transfer windows, after losing their initial appeal to the original ruling made in January 2016.

As a result, Atletico are expected to pay a fine of 900,000 Swiss francs (£622,000) while Real will have to part with 360,000 Swiss francs (£249,000). Both clubs would also be unable to sign players until 2018.

‘Both clubs are to serve a transfer ban that prevents them from registering any players at national and international level for the next two complete and consecutive registration periods’, a FIFA statement reads.
Though, the Spanish sides could still sign players this winter, pending a ruling from their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
